Tefillin (phylacteries) are customarily worn daily on the head and arm by observant men. Though they are tied to prayers that bind the heart to the mind, and are considered a holy object, deep tradition prevents women from wearing them. Wearing the tefillin is a performance, a representation of a holy concept- the connection of mind and body- to physically connect the mind and body. So if a person is neither ‘male’ nor ‘female’ how can the tefillin be navigated?
