NY sound artists, composers and researchers present Terra Acoustica, an open studio and concert of spatialized sound works exploring the richness of the acoustic environment. Both events promise to provide listeners with a sense of the scope of contemporary environmental sound works.
Terra Acoustica features sixteen custom built hemispherical speakers.
Leading the way in a growing search for alternative modes of sonic display, these speakers are changing the way sound is experienced in space. Unlike normal speakers which overpower the acoustics of a space with strong directionality, the hemispherical speakers created by sound artist Stephan Moore interact with their surroundings and more closely reproduce sound as it occurs in the natural world. The hemispherical speakers are based on an original design by Dr. Perry Cook and Dr. Dan Trueman of Princeton University.
In partnership with the NYC Chapter of the American Society for Acoustic Ecology and Hunter College, artists performing in Terra Acoustica worked intensively with a new immersive sound technology for one month in a studio setting within the Film and Media Department at Hunter College.
Projects and presentations range from:
- -Sonic interpretations of NASA data projections for global warming in the NYC area
- -Contemporary and historical field recordings exploring the varied acoustic textures of the city
- -Compositions featuring sound processing and diffusion based on algorithms modeled from the movements of flocking birds, swarming bees and other complex emergent patterns found in the natural world.
- – Experimental works that explore location perception through artificial and hybrid acoustic environments.
The open studio will be a time to visit with the artists and learn more about the speakers and the works being created for them. The concert will present several new and in-progress pieces.
